What is Waakye?

I’m going to have to start my sentence with “I don’t understand how Ghanaians can eat waakye for breakfast”.  If you take a look at waakye you will see it’s a WHOLE meal.  I’m talking breakfast, lunch and dinner all rolled into one.

Being raised in the UK, breakfast is very different,  “modest” one could call it.  We eat things like a bowl of cornflakes or an apple with yoghurt or even toast.  So for me personally waakye goes all the way over my head and then some.  I just don’t get it.  It’s rice, it’s spaghetti, it’s stew, it’s meat, it’s beans, it’s egg, it’s avocado, it’s plantain and gari all in one.  I just hope I haven’t forgotten anything.  Welcome to waakye!

OK let me rewind a little.  You can choose to have waakye in its simplest form, rice and beans with meat or you can add all the extra trimmings that I have already mentioned and no one, I mean no one will bat an eyelid.

If I eat that for breakfast you better believe the only place I’m going to afterwards is bed!  Having said all that, I love waakye (in its simplest form) but only for dinner or perhaps lunch if I’m feeling ravenous.  If you can eat a “fully loaded” platter of waakye for breakfast without help, shoot me a email because I want to know what kind of person can eat so much food for breakfast. Lol ( I’m serious, email me).
