There are a few things you need to consider when choosing that perfect postpartum pad.
You’ll need to pick a pad which is going to be comfortable, especially if you will be wearing it all day long.
The last thing you want is to feel like you are actually wearing a pad and being all icky “down there”.
Postpartum bleeding will be very different from your regular period bleeding so you need to make sure you choose a pad which will absorb as much blood as possible.
The more blood that your pad can soak the more comfortable it will be for you as you won’t have the feeling of having blood all over you.
Some people would like to have a scented sanitary pad. I can understand the reasoning behind this because there is a whole lot of smell that goes on when you are bleeding postpartum.
Before you dive in and decide to go with a scented pad make sure that you are aware of the risks they pose.
A scented pad can cause you irritation due to the chemicals that are used in them so use them with a warning.
Personally speaking, it might be in your best interest to go with unscented especially in the early days of your postpartum bleeding.
Later on you can perhaps look at something scented if that is what you want.
This is definitely going to be a personal choice. Some people can’t bear the thought of having to wash reusable pads and some would just prefer to use disposable pads.
Whichever you decide on, you must be comfortable with your decision.
Why do you need postpartum pads?
Quite simply put, after you have had a baby you will have a period of bleeding which can last for approximately 6 weeks.
This bleeding is quite different from your normal period that you get each month.
Postpartum bleeding is more about your body expelling lochia.
Lochia is made up of blood, the lining of your uterus and bacteria.
It can also be foul smelling so be prepared!
What happens is that after you give birth and you deliver your placenta, the blood vessels that were holding the placenta in place now have nothing to attach to.
Essentially they are floating freely. This is the blood loss that you are experiencing.
As your uterus contracts, those blood vessels then get shut off and your bleeding will slow down and eventually stop.
#1 Always Maxi Overnight Extra Heavy Flow
The Always maxi overnight pad is a great choice. Even those these pads are called “overnight pads” you can use them all day long.
Even better than that they actually last for up to 10 hours so you can comfortably use them without having to worry about leaking.
You can actually purchase these pads according to your blood flow.
To be honest I would still go with these size 5’s which are the heaviest because in those early days your blood flow will be quite heavy.
Be prepared to also have to change more than every 10 hours in those first few days due to clotting and increased blood loss.
The top layer of the pad is made from Polyethylene which is similar to fabric.
It will keep the blood away from your skin and absorb into the pad.
These pads have wings which will keep it in place so you can feel comfortable when moving around that it won’t move around too.
These pads are also unscented, so if you are worried about irritation then this would be a good bet for you.

Don’t be put off by the fact that these pads are called incontinence pads.
Many women feel more secure with these pads as they are made to retain water.
These pads have a 3 in 1 protection meaning that they keep you dry, comfortable and they control any odor.
These poise pads have 12 hour protection which is great.
They may not last the whole 12 hours if have particularly heavy bleeding but they will keep you fresh for a good amount of time.
Poise pads are said to be 10x drier than most regular pads which makes them perfect for postpartum bleeding.
These pads are made to be extra long meaning that you won’t leak out from the back as they should cover your whole area.
They have an adhesive sticker to help them stay in place.

Depending on how you feel about reuseable maternity pads these may or may not be right up your street.
These pads can be used then washed and used again.
In the long run, they will probably save you a bit of money as long as you don’t mind having to wash them regularly.
14 inches is a pretty decent length for a pad to be so that you can have complete confidence in it.
The thing I personally love about these pads is that they are black on the inside so you don’t have to worry about any staining from bleeding.
Just because these cloth pads are reusable that doesn’t stop them from having wings.
The wings will actually clip around your underwear to keep them in place
#5 The Honey Pot Postpartum Feminine Pads with Wings, Herbal All Natural
These honey pot postpartum pads are another great option if you are looking for something that is organic and natural.
These pads are made with chlorine free and pesticide free cotton so you can be sure there are no nasties which could potentially irritate an already sensitive area.
The pads are 33cm in length and are herbal and infused with rose, aloe, mint and lavender essential oils.
I will admit that sounds pretty bliss considering all that has just gone on “down there”.
The pads are absorbent enough to keep you dry and have wings to keep them in place.
The great thing about these pads is that they are made with you in mind and to keep you pH balanced.
I will admit that these pads really have been made with women in mind.
Although these pads are scented they are natural which gives them the edge above others that are similar.
